Swimmer Preparation

The Great Barrier Reef Ocean Swim Series is a one in a lifetime experience swim for many. If you want to race – we are sure there will be others that fancy a bit of a ding dong too. However, if you choose to to take in the Great Barrier Reef experience – we fully understand – there is no other race in an environment like this, anywhere in the world – enjoy one of the seven natural wonders of the world!

Safety is, of course, paramount. Quicksilver will have their regular lifeguards to watch from the pontoon, but we will also have experienced volunteer lifeguards out on the water for the duration of the two swims. And medical backup for all parties.

All swimmers should be very competent swimmers and able to comfortably swim the distances entered, and have done so on previous occasions. No buoyancy or swimming aids, such as fins, snorkels or pull buoys are permitted on any of the 3 & 5Km swims, nor the Relay.

The swim the reef event over 1 Km does allow the use of these swimming aids.

The water should be in the region of around 23/24/25 degrees centigrade subject to prevailing weather and currents on the days around the swim.

It is necessary and a rule that you are able to complete the distances comfortably and have taken part in other ocean or open waters swims previously. We are on the protected side of the reef, so conditions should be manageable, and quite likely very pleasant, subject obviously to weather conditions.

All swimmers will be started in a wave – we ask you to select your target time as part of registration. Waves will go off in speed order, fastest first.

Make sure you are in good condition – and enjoy a swim like no other!
